Module Summary
This case-based module will discuss the varying presentations of a cough in adults, and guide you through diagnosis and management.
Adult cough is one of the commonest acute presentations in primary care, especially in winter. Patients often present ‘sub-acutely’, too, with a cough that is persisting. Most causes are infective and, as is often the case in minor illness, consultations often hinge on whether or not an antibiotic is necessary, especially in the acute situation.

- Help you identify the causes of acute cough
- Clarify the various factors that influence antibiotic prescribing decisions
- Provide a guide to terms commonly used in lung examination
- Help you manage cough in those with pre-existing lung disease
- Provide a logical approach to patients with a more prolonged cough
