Dr David Capehorn has been at the forefront of work on the interface between primary and secondary care paediatrics in the south west for over thirty years. Having combined his work as Honorary Associate Specialist in children’s emergency medicine in Bristol with his work as a GP in the South West, he has been involved in development of innovative new services throughout his career.
He won an NHS innovation award for the primary care paediatric service he founded in 2003, providing advice and local clinic support for GPs. Dr Capehorn and his team took thousands of referrals per year, with the emphasis on keeping paediatric management within primary care. In addition to his practice, he has worked as an author and educator, publishing the first symptom based textbook on paediatric accident and emergency medicine. He also formed part of the clinical guidelines group for Bristol children’s hospital. Latterly in his career, as well as clinical work, he has been working as a GP educational supervisor and NHS England appraiser, as well as a keynote speaker and lecturer in paediatric primary care.
